Death Confirmed as Suicide

An incident on the Bishop Indian Reservation on New Year's Day has been ruled a suicide, not a homicide as originally thought.  icso

An Inyo Sheriff's deputy driving down North Sierra Highway was flagged down by individuals who told him that they believed someone had been killed.  The tentative conclusion was suicide and Coroner Leon Brune has now confirmed that.

Because of the earlier two homicides in the last six months, officers were careful to respond quickly.

Suicide is another major issue in Indian Country, and it seems like nothing effective has ever been done. It is hard to discuss it due to the stigma behind it, but many local natives and non-natives alike have lost loved ones to suicide.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and his loved ones.

"Suicide is the answer" Suicide is the answer to many questions, the family and friends have many unanswered questions. It is an unacceptable end to life as we know it.But to the person who seeks the answer, the end is a relief,a freedom,an uplifting of a burden. Suicide does not happen overnite, the accumulation of many factors contributed to the end result."WE" must all ask ourselves the many questions to the "ANSWER"."I" have walked the same path as this young man,in fact I have walked side by side, having stood on the threshold seeking the same answer,I can only say "REST IN PEACE".As "WE" family and friends morn the loss of a loved one,"WE" should and must acknowledge that suicide was not committed by one ,but by the actions of all.We are all responsible for the loss and only he has the "ANSWER"

Suicide is not the answer- but unfortunately many people believe it is in their anguish.

I don't think it's a good idea to play the blame game. Very few people know how to handle those who are severely depressed. Depression can make people do odd things which can drive away their loved ones. It is difficult to seek treatment when depressed, and even small barriers to treatment can seem insurmountable.

I don't think the local resources available to depressed tribal members are effective, and changes need to be made. For example, look at the mental health program at Toiyabe Indian Health Project. The mental health building is located separately from the main clinic. This can make it difficult for some people to get treatment because they know that just being seen going into that building means they have a mental health problem. That is one thing that could be changed, among many.

I know for a fact Toiyabe is a joke... where else are anti-depressants "prescribed" (doled) out and no supervision provided for the patients... Just thinking about how Toiyabe operates is depressing in itself. The "MD's" (prescription writers) don't really consult with the mental health (family services)people to see how the patients are doing...

It is sad that people feel they cant get help for their depression without people thinking they are crazies. Another point is that depression and bi-polar disorders are also caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain due to use of drugs and alcohol, a MAJOR problem in this area! It takes a long time for your brain to start regularly producing endorphins(happy feelings)so if people get sober, they should definitely have someone to talk to! You would think with such a big community that they could find someone to talk to. So sad, and my prayers are with the family!

Depression is a state of mind. How one person gets to that point,no one knows but that person.YES drugs and alcohol are a MAJOR problem in this country,BUT that did not lead someone to take their own life. Many factors contribute to ones state of mind when they contemplate suicide.
