Graffiti Near Bishop Rankles Residents

Over the past few weeks, Chipmunk Canyon residents have noticed a drastic uptick in graffiti and trash right off the road to their homes. A large boulder has now been painted entirely blue with white hand prints and initials. Other nearby boulders are covered by more traditional graffiti such as initials and peace signs.

graffiti_chipmunkSpray painted letters on the sides of local buildings raises the blood pressure of many local residents. Graffiti is not new to that location near Chipmunk Canyon or the Eastern Sierra, but the extent of this painting has some local residents up in arms.

The Inyo Sheriff’s Department first took the report of the graffiti on December 30th. Deputies have stepped up patrols in that area since that time. At last word no one had been caught, and residents say that additional graffiti continues to appear.

While someone may be having fun painting up a wall or a rock in this case, it is up to the property owner to clean up the mess left behind. With these rocks on the way to Chipmunk Canyon, it appears that the property owner is the Department of Water and Power. Chris Plakos with DWP explained that the department has an active policy to remove graffiti when it’s found or reported. If this new paint job is on DWP land, crews will have their work cut out for them. The entire boulder, about the size of a VW bug, is completely blue on all sides.

While the paint remains, local residents have worked to clean up the trash that appears to be associated with the new graffiti. One Chipmunk Canyon property owner reports that residents filled half a pick-up bed with paint rollers, empty bottles, smashed computers and other detritus. A quick look around the now blue boulder reveals numerous Bud Light and King Cobra bottles that appear to be recently tossed.

With a rock painted the colors of Bishop High School, it is no great stretch to consider a possible link to local students. Bishop School Superintendent Barry Simpson said that his staff is looking into the graffiti incident and possible teen drinking that may have occurred.

FI anyone saw the rock before, it had horrible cuss words and other offensive language all over it. It looked terrible. Although the blue stands out it is Bronco blue and looks a lot better then the horrible writing that was on it before. I would like to know what "residents" are complaining about the rock. I drive up and down red rock canyon everyday i find the rock humorous. No one should get in trouble for painting the rock blue

I don't think the blue paint is horrible. It does beat the profanity, and OVP spray painted everywhere. Like nobody knows there's a reservation nearby? The alcohol containers they had to clean up should be the problem. Not the blue paint. I bet it is humorous!!

Maybe a picture of how this rock used to look should be posted on here. Honestly a completely blue rock looks 100 times better than a rock that has profanity and other random grafitti. It looks like someone was trying to make it look better, not worse, and now someone is making a big deal out of nothing! How do you fix a rock with graffiti on it? No one ever said anything about the way it looked before which looked trashy and disgusting. This really isn't that big of a deal!

it's graffiti regardless if it's hand prints or cuss words. Find and arrest the students that are responsible.

If you like paint on rocks in the High Sierra, move back to the ghetto.

The university I attended had a "spirit rock" that students were allowed to paint graffiti on. It was quite popular, even used for marriage proposals and birthday wishes. Maybe something like this could be provided as an alternative.

Blue rock? Ok let's give another group the idea of red and help spread the word Let's make the Sierra Mountains look like the gutters of Los Angeles. I don't know about you folks here in Bishop. Tourism is the main blood in this town. School kids should have painting over the rock in a natural color to blend in and get praised for doing something right for once in this community. Oh I forgot, the town is too busy fighting it out at Rusty's Bar while their kids are partying in the hills.

I have driven by the rock and have to say that it is a vast improvement over the graffiti that was on the rock before. I found that the handprints and Bronco Blue color could be shown as school spirit, instead of the profanity and spray paint. If the community is so worried about teens painting a rock, they should be more concerned about the teens who are drinking and doing drugs. The article said that there was alcohol bottles by the rock, and I happen to believe that the two are not connected- I have seen bottles out there all the time, even before the painting. So how about Bishop citizens think of this rock as a positive thing rather than a negative. I love what they have done, the paint job looks way better. I hope it stays!

How about sand blasting the rock so it can return to its original granite state like the rest of the Sierra? Vandalism of any kind has no place in the Eastside...As far as covering up the old graffiti with Bronco Blue, two wrongs don't make a right...
