DFG Proposes Expanded Hunting of Bears

The Department of Fish and Game has proposed new regulations for bear hunting - unlimited hunting of bears in California and encouragement of hunting bears with dogs. Locally, the group Bear With Us opposes this move by DFG.bear_cubs

Fish and Game said that letters of opposition must go in by Saturday, March 13th. Marianne O'Connor of Bear With Us in Mammoth Lakes called the proposal outrageous - a proposal, she said, that gives the state's blessing on using dogs to hunt and tree bears so hunters can shoot them out of trees.

Some in opposition say that Fish and Game has demonstrated no need to expand bear hunting in California and has failed to adequately study the statewide bear population or the populations in counties where bear hunting has been proposed.

Those who want to comment can write to Dr. Eric Loft, Chief, Department of Fish and Game, Wildlife Branch, 1812 Ninth St. Sacramento, CA 95818. Email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Marc Kenyon, DFG Coordinator for Bears, Mountain Lions and Wild Pigs, said that most of the proposed changes are based on the black bear management plan. He said if, at any point, DFG learns of negative impacts, they will alter the regulations. Kenyon did say that over the past 20 years, the black bear population has increased four fold to about 38,000.

Why the changed regulations? Kenyon said it's DFG's job to provide hunting opportunities when warranted. Other sources say bear hunting is way down in California.

This is nothing more than an attempt to line the pockets of a dysfunctional Dept. of Fish & Game. In all my years out hiking and camping, I have never had a problem with a bear. In fact, the only time I've seen one is at a campground dumpster diving and one at Whitney Portal. People are the problem.

Treeing a bear with dogs and shooting it is a very girlyman way to hunt. It's about as challenging as shooting a milk cow.

What a big step in the wrong direction. Education is the only thing that will save the bears from us humans.

Rob is absolutely right. Somebody get these bears into school! I'd start with sex ed, and pregnancy prevention. Maybe gym class to burn off the last of the winter fat. Bears have no natural predators. Starvation is their natural population control. When man introduces himself into an ecosystem by building towns or cities, he must accept the responsibility of his involvement. So unless you want bears ransacking houses, because nimrods feed them even though they know they aren't supposed to, numbers have to be kept in check. Unfortunately town bears are rarely Gentle Ben.

How can shooting them be better than re-location? Again people are the issue. If you like bird feeders and leaving dog food out.......you will have a bear problem. Simple. How about letting that poor guy who had the bear eat his lunch last summer come back and just shoot them all? I'm sure he's not even serving jail time.

Because Jeff, when you take a bear and drop it off in suitable bear habitat, another bear likely lives there. Since that area is probably supporting all the bears it can, one of these bears will have to leave, or both will learn to "forage" at campsites like the lunch eater you mentioned. Although that is innocuous enough, at some point that bear would have grown larger, and probably more aggressive, because bears, like people, and every other carbon based life form go for the easy meal. Though shooting them seems cruel, it beats starvation.
