Unemployment Update- Tough Times Continue

The latest numbers from the state show that unemployment has dropped in Mono County, but has risen in Inyo County.

main_st._bishopBoth Inyo and Mono Counties continue to come in below both the state and nation. California as a whole is listed at 13.2% The United States is listed at 10.6%

In January of this year, unemployment in Mono County was listed at 8.1% with 830 people looking for work. This is higher than a year ago when January of 2009 checked in with 6.3% unemployment, but down since November of 2009 when 10.8% of the workforce was out of a job and looking for one.

Inyo County continues to hover around one in ten people looking for work. 1010 people are listed as unemployed which works out to 10.3% for the January unemployment rate. This is up over 9.6% unemployment listed for December of 2009 and up over a year before when January of 2009 was also listed at 9.6%.

The unemployment numbers reflect people out of work and looking for work. The state doesn’t list those that have taken pay cuts and furloughs and those that are working part time in the Eastern Sierra. Across California, the state calculates that 9% of people with jobs are working part time when they would rather work full time.

Inyo and Mono counties have very high seasonal employment trends. The year-over-year numbers are the only valid comparisons. It would be helpful to your readers to print a graph or table that shows employment data.
