The Mono Grand Jury earlier recommended that Mono County and the Town of Mammoth Lakes should do something about jail overcrowding.
In a response letter drafted recently, Mammoth Town Manager Rob Clark and Mono County Administrative Officer Dave Wilbrecht addressed the Jury concern. Their letter says that the Mono Supervisors have appropriated $55,000 for a county jail needs study. The CAO and Sheriff, according to the letter, are evaluating potential consultants to do the work.
The officials said that the jail needs study will also serve as assistance to apply for a state grant to build a facility. The officials said that typically such grants fund 75% of the construction cost.
Town officials point out that the plan for the new Town Public Safety Building includes three holding cells for less than 24 hours incarceration. Officials do admit that this project has been put on holding pending receipt of adequate development impact fees.
Most of Mono County's jail inmates come from arrests in the Mammoth Lakes area.
